Join the Movement: Host a Neighborhood Gathering to Foster Community and Mental Well-being

CONO provides resources to support the city’s campaign to address mental health through community connections.

In a bustling city like Colorado Springs, where the vibrant energy of urban life often intersects with the solitude of individual homes, there's a growing awareness of the importance of social connection for mental health. Recognizing this, the City of Colorado Springs, Mayor Yemi, Councilmember David Leinweber, CONO, and numerous community partners, are launching a groundbreaking initiative: the 1,000 Neighborhood Gatherings.

The premise is simple yet profound, encouraging residents to step out of their homes and host gatherings within their neighborhoods, to combat social isolation and loneliness while nurturing a sense of community and support. It's a call to action for all of us to improve mental well-being, right where we live, on our blocks, in our neighborhoods.

Mayor Yemi Mobolade emphasized the significance of connectedness with our neighbors, highlighting how strong communities are built upon these foundations. "By fostering a welcoming and supportive environment," he remarked, "we can lift each other and create a sense of belonging that is essential for overall well-being."

Councilmember David Leinweber echoed this sentiment and emphasized the initiative's focus on personal stories intertwining, hands reaching out, and hearts uniting against isolation. It's about more than just numbers; it's about fostering meaningful connections within our community.

Launching during Mental Health Awareness Month on May 18-19 and culminating on National Good Neighbor Day on September 28, the initiative aims to register 1,000 neighborhood gatherings. Residents are encouraged to host events ranging from simple porch lunches to lively block parties, each contributing to social cohesion and mental well-being.

But how do you get involved? Hosting a neighborhood gathering is as easy as 1, 2, 3:

1. Pick the Date: Choose a date and time for your gathering, ensuring it falls between May 18 and September 28. Weekends are perfect for larger gatherings, while weekdays or weekend mealtimes work well for more intimate get-togethers.

2. Choose and Plan a Gathering: Whether it's a neighborhood park event, a porch lunch, or a community beautification project, there are endless possibilities for hosting a gathering. Need ideas? Visit CONO's website to download helpful toolkits packed with tips and inspiration.

3. Invite Your Neighbors: Spread the word by knocking on doors, posting on neighborhood social media platforms, or utilizing CONO's event planning support. Remember, the more, the merrier!
